Walking While Texting Etiquette

Take a walk through the mall on any given day and you will see people looking at their smart phones with their head forward and flexed. People are so consumed by their smart phones that there have been reports of people walking into oncoming traffic, bumping into people and tripping and falling. In a study that looked at the head flexion angle while using a smartphone, published in the Journal called ‘Ergonomics’, it was found that participants maintained head flexion of 33–45° from vertical when using the smartphone. The head flexion angle was significantly larger (p < 0.05) for text messaging than for the other tasks, and significantly larger while sitting than while standing. Study results suggest that text messaging, which is one of the most frequently used app categories of smartphones, could be a main contributing factor to the occurrence of neck pain of heavy smartphone users.
